I perform both fully cemented and hybrid hip replacements.
A hybrid hip replacement means the femoral stem is cemented and the socket (Acetabulum) is uncemented and fixed by press fit into the bone.
Uncemented implants have a rough coating of hydroxyapatite which is normal constituent of bone that the patient’s bone then grows into or onto and fixes the implant firmly.
The Exeter femoral stem is the most commonly used implant in England and Wales and has excellent long term follow up and survival rates. It is acknowledged as the gold standard implant in hip surgery and importantly for my patients this is the implant I have been trained in and works very well in my practice.
Cemented femoral implants are suitable for all ages as evidenced by the almost non existent failure rate for aseptic loosening (loosening due to the fixation of the implant failing) in all groups of patients.
The articulation (ball in socket) can be either a metal or ceramic head on a polyethylene socket or socket liner.
