These prostheses are made from shaped metal components that fix to the end of the femur and top of the tibia and then “linked” together with a polyethylene insert that allows the bending and straightening. The implants in the vast majority of knee replacements are freely moving and not constrained and it is the patient’s ligaments and soft tissues that control the knee movements and stability. Occasionally in knees with deformity or damaged ligaments more constrained implants are needed to keep the knee stable as it moves. These implants are often used in revision knee surgery.
